Maarten Visser studied saxophone at the Brabants Conservatorium (Netherlands). After completing his studies in 1994 he moved to Chennai (India) to study Carnatic music. In 2000 he started a collaboration with Indian choreographer Padmini Chettur, composing music for Segment of a Solo (2000), Fragility (2001), 3 Solos (2003), Paperdoll (2005), PUSHED (2006), Beautiful Thing 1 (2008), Beautiful Thing 2 (2011), and Walldancing (2012). In December 2012 Visser and poet Vivek Narayanan premiered a collaborative work for saxophone and words, and Maarten expanded this work into an oto.3 project, the music has been released in 2014. In 2016 he composed music for a play directed by Pravin Kannanur (Magic Lantern), for which he constructed various instruments, like tubulum and intonarumori. Visser is currently composing new work for saxophone solo – his second saxophone solo production, an experimental production with a visual artist, and music for the performance of a film project with Padmini Chettur, called Varnam.
